WOOLY BLUE CURLS, Trichostema lanatum
The CONDOR 300 is home to a variety of plants, some not easily seen near where most of us live, along the coasts of Monterey County. The 300 peaks out at about 3850 feet of elevation, so its climate has more variation than that of the very moderate coast, and some of its denizens are different than what we see around our homes.
This quite striking plant can be seen at several locations on the property, and at other locations near Tassajara Road, noticeable in the summer, when it blooms. |
Monterey County Wildflowers describes this plant as
"A medium-sized shrub with flowers borne on long spikes. The individual flowers are exceptionally beautiful with a rich blue or pink calyx and blue-purple petals with extraordinarily long exserted stamens. Leaves are lance-linear, green above and woolly below with long, tangled hairs. Some fine examples will be found alongside the Tassajara Road as one climbs up toward Chew’s Ridge." |
